Chemical management
services (CMS) is a burgeoning industry. There are several different
definitions and a broad range of services currently offered. One
of the primary goals of the CMS Forum is to help customers understand
the benefits of CMS. To this end, the Forum defines CMS as:
A strategic, long-term relationship in which a customer
contracts with a service provider to supply and manage the customer's
chemicals and related services. Under a CMS contract, the provider's
compensation is tied primarily to quantity and quality of services
delivered, not chemical volume. CMS goes beyond invoicing and
delivering product to optimizing processes, continuously reducing
chemical lifecycle costs and risk, and reducing environmental
impact."
This definition was developed with input from leading service
providers including: Ashland, Inc., Calgon Corporation, Castrol
Industrial North America, Cincinnati Milacron, Ecolink, Inc.,
Great Western Chemical, Haas Corporation, Henkel, Hercules, Inc.,
Houghton International, Quaker Chemical Corporation, and Radian
International.
The CMS Forum produced the first CMS Industry Report in 2000, still only source of its kind focused specifically on the chemical management services industry. The Report highlights recent trends in CMS.
