A message from
the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the first 2004 issue of the CMS Insider. The CMS Forum
is looking forward to an exciting year as we continue to expand
our international activities and communication efforts.
John
Claussen, our Asia Program Director, is currently traveling in
Korea and Singapore to prepare for our upcoming workshops in those
regions on February 24th and March 26th- check out more information
on the conferences below. CSP'a Deputy Director, Tom Votta, also
reports below on the development of CSP Europe and exciting progress
being made to develop CMS for European markets.
Closer to home, we are continuing to promote CMS in multiple industries
through workshops, industry benchmarking, case studies and articles.
We are seeing progress in the efforts to apply CMS to smaller
enterprises as discussed in an article by professors Tom Bierma
and Frank Waterstraat below.
We celebrate the recent additions of Houghton International and
Dolphin Software to the Forum, and we look forward to the continued
growth of the Forum in 2004. Thank you for your support and best
wishes for an early spring!
Warmest Regards,
Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

A Successful CMS Program in a Small Manufacturing Operation
By Thomas J. Bierma and Frank L. Waterstraat, Professors,
Illinois State University
Finding
ways of introducing CMS to smaller facilities has been an ongoing
challenge to CMS providers and customers. Frequently, the key
to providing cost savings is to take full life-cycle costs into
account. In this case study, Professors Bierma and Waterstraat
look at one example of effective CMS implementation in a small
manufacturing operation. Download

Upcoming
Singapore Workshop
Please join us at the Chemical Management Services (CMS) workshop
in Singapore, presented by Chemical Strategies Partnership and
the CMS Forum on February 24, 2004 from 2:00-5:30pm. The workshop
will be part of the Chemical Logistics and SCM World Asia 2004
Conference, attracting high-level suppliers and customers to discuss
supply chain management and collaboration for the chemical industry.

here.
Korea Seminar in March
CSP will be conducting a CMS seminar in South Korea on March 26,
2004 as part of our Korean initiative. The seminar will be hosted
jointly by CSP, the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology’s
National Cleaner Production Center (KITECH) in Seoul, and our
partners at Keimyung University. It will include presentations
and CMS training and will be attended by a variety of Korean suppliers,
manufacturers, and government officials. Details of the CMS seminar
will be provided in the coming weeks. Please contact
John Claussen with questions or to participate in
and/or attend the seminar.
First Project Launched in Europe
CSP has signed a two-year contract with Yorkshire Forward to introduce
and test the CMS concept in the United Kingdom (UK) chemical supply
chain. This is the first time that the CMS business model will
be tested in the UK. The project scope will include recruiting
and conducting a pilot, refining the CMS model to fit the current
UK context, and education/outreach in the Yorkshire region. For
more information, contact
Tom Votta.
CSP
Europe in ’04?
CSP has teamed with three European organizations and is currently
seeking funding to launch a CSP Europe. Our partners include research
institutes TNO in the Netherlands and Joanneum in Austria, UK
consultancy International E-Chem, and the UK-based nonprofit Green
Alliance. The project is still in its formative stages, and we
look forward to its further development throughout 2004. For more
information, contact
Tom Votta.
University Research- conclusions to date
With the funding from an EPA Innovations Grant, CSP is currently
assisting Dartmouth College to recruit a CMS provider to implement
a comprehensive chemical management system. The Request for Proposal
(RfP) was issued on February 9, 2004, and the contract is expected
to be awarded by June 2004. Dartmouth plans to pilot the CMS program
at the Chemistry Department, then phase in the program campus-wide.
With
the same EPA funding, CSP is also working with University of California
Merced – a new research campus in the UC system - to assess
the feasibility of the CMS model at this new campus. These two
initiatives follow a research project launched by CSP in 2002
to explore the viability of the CMS model in educational and research
institutions. The initial research was sponsored by the US EPA
Office of Solid Waste. Click

Green Suppliers Network Seeks to Transform the Supply
Chain
EPA recently launched the Green Suppliers Network, a government-industry
partnership that works to improve both environmental and economic
performance at all levels of the manufacturing supply chain. By
working with GSN, suppliers hope to continuously improve products
and processes, increase energy efficiency, identify cost-saving
opportunities, and optimize resources and technologies with the
aim of eliminating waste. Read

Private
Cash Drives Chemical Equity
Private equity has become the driving force behind merger and
acquisition activity in the chemicals sector, following a sharp
rise in public-to-private deals last year. But investors are far
from happy with management quality at the companies they buy.

A
New Wave of Corporate Responsibility?
For decades the environmental movement has been characterized
as being at odds or out of touch with the bedrock assumptions
of U.S. capitalism. In reality, however, companies with superior
performance on environmental matters (as well as other social
concerns) are producing better returns in the stock market for
shareholders, partly because those companies face fewer environmental
risks to their future profitability. Read
