A message from
the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the first 2005 issue of the CMS Insider. CSP and the
CMS Forum are looking forward to an eventful year with multiple
pilot projects, new communications efforts, expanded case studies,
and a new addition to the CSP team.
CSP is launching several pilot projects this year in a number
of new sectors, including the forest products industry, K-12 school
districts, and continued international expansion. CSP has received
an EPA grant to test the applicability of CMS in the Kindergarten
through 12th grade school district in Lansing, Michigan. The project
is jointly implemented with General Motors and promises to expand
conventional ways of looking at CMS. We are finalizing the companies
who will participate in our pilot projects in the forest products
industry and in the Yorkshire region of the United Kingdom.
CSP is pleased to announce our new Program Director, Jeff Cole.
Jeff will be working on many of our pilot projects. With a background
in investment banking, energy, and enterprise software development,
we feel he will bring a unique set of skills to augment our team.
We
look forward to keeping you abreast of these activities and others
as we move forward in 2005. Best wishes from all of us for a prosperous
year!
Warmest
Regards,
Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

EPA Performance Track Program Provides Opportunity for CMS Providers
and Customers
By Priscilla Halloran, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Office of Solid Waste
The
EPA’s Performance Track program recognizes and rewards outstanding
environmental performance by public and private businesses. Some
of the benefits received by Performance Track companies include
publicity, networking, incentives, and a low priority for routine
inspections. Numerous CMS Forum members are already Performance
Track companies. As a best management practice, CMS offers a good
entry point into the Performance Track program.

CSP
Welcomes Jeff Cole
CSP is very pleased to announce we have welcomed a new Program
Director, Jeff Cole. Jeff comes to us from Ecos Technologies,
where he designed supply chain management software and managed
their European sales and marketing. Previously, Jeff worked as
a financial analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He has a B.A.
from Dartmouth College, an MBA from the Haas School of Business
at UC Berkeley, and an MA at Energy Resources Group at UC Berkeley.
Please join us in welcoming him to the CSP team. He can be contacted
at jeff@chemicalstrategies.org.
Pilot Project with K-12 Schools
Chemicals and their mismanagement are increasingly becoming a
serious issue for schools. More and more of K-12 school resources
are diverted from their core function, educating children, as
they struggle to find effective solutions to ever-increasing demands.
CSP has teamed with General Motors and the Lansing Public School
District to introduce CMS and Resource Management as a combined
strategy to improve chemical and waste management in K-12 schools.
Funding is provided by the EPA, through a Resource Conservation
Challenge grant. We will test whether this approach achieves viable
solutions that will enable K-12 schools to go beyond compliance
and experience benefits from reduced chemical use (through improved
procurement practices, better information, and better management),
reduced waste generation, and enhanced recycling, all of which
contribute to a healthy school environment that helps reduce sick
days and enhance learning while reducing school operating costs.
Additionally, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
recently released an RfQ for chemical management in schools. For
more information, visit
the DEQ website.
Update on Yorkshire
CSP co-hosted a successful workshop on October 21st, 2004 in West
Yorkshire, UK, as part of our pilot program with Yorkshire Forward
to introduce CMS to companies in the Yorkshire region. As we reported
in the last newsletter, the workshop was very well-received and
participant evaluations were uniformly positive. A number of the
companies and organizations present expressed interest in the
concept, and asked to be kept informed of developments as the
project develops. CSP and its project partners have spent the
ensuing months in follow-up discussions with all of those companies,
and we plan to announce a pilot company in the late spring, 2005.

Studies
Link CSR Initiatives with Positive Financial Performance
Two new literature reviews have identified a link between corporate
social/environmental Responsibility and positive financial performance.
The two studies are entitled “Corporate
Social and Financial Performance: A Meta-Analysis”
and “Corporate
Environmental Governance”. Both reports conclude
that there is strong evidence that where a company has sound environmental
governance, policies, practices, and performance, they are highly
likely to also have better financial performance. (Business and
the Environment, December 2004, V15: 12: p.1)
Maintaining
Value Through Service
A report from the Wharton-Stanford Service Supply Chain Thought
Leaders Forum discusses the primary needs for service-based companies.
The report outlines the key issues service providers should understand
in order to deliver products and services that create and maintain
value, including performance metrics and lifecycle integration.

New Tool Helps Managers Justify Environmental Compliance
Costs
A new tool from BLR (Business & Legal Reports) may help compliance
managers articulate the economic advantages of their environment,
health, and safety programs. The toolkit provides managers with
charts and formulas to help translate each EHS program element
into the relevant benefit for the organization, such as cost savings
or increased revenues. For more information, click

Green Purchasing: Lessons From Overseas
