A message from
the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the Winter 2007 issue of the CMS Insider!
We would like to thank all who participated in the 10th Annual CMS Workshop in October, the most well-attended CMS Workshop to date. The Workshop featured insightful presentations on key topics in CMS and fostered a unique learning experience for all those who attended. We had participation from a wide variety of industries, including aerospace, air transport, automotive, pharmaceutical, biotech, forest products, government, utilities, and schools. With such great enthusiasm for the San Francisco location the past two years, we have already set the date and place for our next Workshop. We hope you will all join us next year in San Francisco’s Japantown at the Miyako Hotel on October 23-25, 2007.
Learn about our newest pilot project - CSP and the US EPA are working to promote the CMS model at school districts nationwide, and to test the CMS model in a tribal community. CSP is currently recruiting an interested urban school district and tribal community to participate in the pilot project.
This issue’s Viewpoints from the Field features an article on CMS in Sweden and Europe. The article gives an overview of existing advantages and barriers for CMS providers and customers in the European context and highlights important lessons regarding the role of CMS in shaping these markets.
We look forward to the continued growth of the Forum in 2007. Thank you for your support and best wishes in the New Year!
Warmest

Chemical Management Services in Sweden and Europe:
Lessons for the Future
by Oksana Mont, Pranshu Singhal, and Zinaida Fadeeva
This article provides an overview of the existing advantages and barriers for CMS providers and customers in the European context, identifies conflicts of interest between them, and highlights important lessons regarding the role of CMS in shaping these markets. It reports on findings from interviews with European chemical producers and other stakeholders of chemical management services and is directed toward industry professionals interested in chemical management services. It concludes that economic and environmental advantages of CMS are not automatically guaranteed and lists factors that are critical for developing a win-win CMS model for both providers and customers. Finally, ways of fostering CMS dissemination in Europe are suggested. Download the article.

Case Study: Water Use Reduction at an Auto Assembly Plant
Misunderstanding the true cost of utilizing raw materials such as water can frequently result in poor management choices regarding how the raw materials are used. A 2004 assessment performed by the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center on a major automotive assembly plant revealed that the company perceived its water costs to be 36 times less than the true cost of using the water when the value of process chemicals, energy, water purification measures, and wastewater treatment were included. Within one year of the assessment, numerous conservation measures had been implemented such that water usage was reduced by nearly one third, resulting in cost savings of over two million dollars per year. Read the case study.

Green (safer) Chemistry – Governor’s Directive
Ecology Center
Michigan public health and environmental leaders applauded a precedent-setting initiative signed by Governor Granholm that will make the state a national leader in the fast-growing field of green chemistry. Granholm's Green Chemistry Executive Directive promotes safe technologies and innovations aimed at lowering health risks and preventing harmful chemical pollution at the source. The Executive Directive will help the s tate devise strategies to promote green chemistry and engineering education, development, and the production of bio-materials, chemicals, and catalysts that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Dr. Paul Anastas, Green Chemistry advocate wins $250,000 Heinz Award
Dr. Paul Anastas, chemist and founder and director of the Green Chemistry Institute, was one of six recipients of the 12th Annual Heinz Awards. Known as the “father of green chemistry”, Dr. Paul Anastas has helped advance pollution prevention through cleaner, cheaper and smarter chemistry. In order to help build momentum for his vision, Dr. Anastas convinced the Clinton Administration in 1996 to sponsor the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, which has since become the only presidential-level award in the chemical sciences. It has inspired hundreds of companies to embrace his “Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry,” outlined in his book (co-authored with Dr. John Warner), Green Chemistry, Theory and Practice. New Online Cleaning Database to Help Manufacturers Switch to Safer Chemistries
Toxic Use Reduction Institute
The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell developed a new surface cleaning online database called CleanerSolutions. The free, interactive web-based tool helps manufacturers find safer cleaning alternatives that perform as well as hazardous chemicals--without increasing risks. The system helps companies understand how to choose alternatives so that overall risks to workers and the environment are reduced. Access the free database or learn more.

Partners in Cost Management
Purchasing
Consolidating MRO goods and services purchases with a few select suppliers brings saving in the form of price discounts. But even more important in the long term is the establishment of close collaboration between purchasing and MRO suppliers. Together buyers and suppliers can reduce costs by streamlining processes, increase revenue through enabling less downtime and higher productivity, and improve performance through on-time delivery and customer satisfaction. According to Purchasing’s 2006 MRO/Indirect Strategic Sourcing Benchmark Study, collaboration with suppliers has been identified as one of the four key practices that differentiate the best performers from the rest. California Lawmakers Pass Biomonitoring Bill
Chemical Week
California’s legislature has passed a bill that would create a voluntary, statewide biomonitoring program to measure toxic substances in a sampling of residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducts a nationwide survey of 148 chemicals every two years. The California proposal would help the state track “hot spots” as well as ethnic, economic, and geographical trends of exposure to toxic chemicals. Read more.
EU Industry Details Next Steps for Developing Sustainable Technology
Chemical Week
Europe’s chemical and biotechnology industries have proposed a 20-year research program for strengthening innovation in the field of sustainable chemistry under the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem) initiative. The proposed research focuses on eight areas of innovation: bio-based economy, energy, healthcare, information and communication technologies, nanotechnology, sustainable quality of life, sustainable product and process design, and transport. SusChem recently published an Implementation Action Plan (IAP), which outlines the next steps necessary to realize future priorities for European research efforts.
