Summer 2004

A publication of the CMS Forum; a project of the Chemical Strategies Partnership

Notes from the Forum
A Message from the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the Summer 2004 issue of the CMS Insider. We are currently busily organizing our 8th annual Chemical Management Services (CMS) Workshop to be held October 13-15 in Dallas, Texas (see more details below). The workshop will feature the most case studies ever with presentations by a wide diversity of customer company representatives discussing their CMS programs. Participants will have the opportunity to explore in-depth how companies can get started with a CMS program, how to maximize savings through chemical management, how to create value in mature programs, and future trends in the CMS industry. It offers a good learning opportunity both for companies who are new to CMS and those with established CMS programs - so don’t miss it!

The Chemical Strategies Partnership is launching a pilot project in the United Kingdom funded by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Development Agency. We will hold a CMS seminar in Yorkshire, UK on October 21, 2004 to introduce the CMS concept to local business and recruit a company for a demonstration project. (See below for more information).

We hope you find the Viewpoints article informative. It discusses the emerging REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) regulations which likely constitute the most far-reaching piece of environmental legislation in Europe in the past 30 years.

Best wishes for a relaxing summer.

Warmest Regards,

Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

The enterprise department of the European Commission has proposed adding 202 hazardous chemicals to a list of chemical substances it is planning to ban from public sale in the European Union, thereby increasing the number of proposed banned chemicals to 346. The Commission says the new chemicals are used minimally or not at all by the public, and the impact on the chemical industry will be small.
