A publication of the CMS Forum; a project of the Chemical Strategies Partnership

Notes from the Forum
Welcome to the second edition of the CMS Insider!

This edition includes news and information on CMS activities in a range of industries - evidence of the CMS Forum's commitment to grow the awareness and practice of economically and environmentally beneficial chemical management services. Be sure to check out the article in Viewpoints from the Field on the applicability of CMS to small and medium sized enterprises. Also, mark your calendars for the CMS workshops in Singapore and Chicago as well as the many other conferences where you can find CMS Forum members speaking this year.

I also would like to inform CMS Forum members and readers that I will be stepping down as CMS Forum Director in order to focus on the development of international programs for the Chemical Strategies Partnership. In July, my colleague, and CSP Executive Director, Jill Kauffman Johnson will return as Director of the CMS Forum.

Warmest Regards,
John D. Claussen
CMS Forum Director

CMS in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Setting
by Dayna Greenspan and Clarke Miller, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley

In early 2002 Haas School of Business joined with the Chemical Strategies Partnership (CSP) to work with Nu-Metal Finishing, a small metal finishing firm in Santa Clara, CA to evaluate how the CMS model could apply to a small/medium sized enterprise (SME). In 2000, CSP completed a similar project to test the CMS model in the tool & die industry sector in western Pennsylvania. Learn about both of these projects and how to obtain additional information regarding the applicability of CMS to SMEs. Read Full Article...

CSP, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group (SVMG), and the Santa Clara County Pollution Prevention Program (SCCP3) hosted a CMS Workshop on March 12, 2002 at Philips Electronics' facility in Sunnyvale, CA. The workshop brought together representatives from a variety of organizations to hear presentations and engage in discussions about the Silicon Valley Pilot Program. A total of 46 people from 28 different organizations attended this workshop, which featured case study presentations from the four participants in the Silicon Valley Pilot Program: Analog Devices, Seagate Technology, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and Nu-Metal Finishing. United Technologies Corporation also gave a presentation detailing their efforts to implement a global CMS program. Complete Summary

From one participant at the workshop:
"Very informative. I walk away from this workshop with a much better appreciation for the benefits of a CMS partnership."
