A
Message from the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the summer issue of the CMS Insider. You may have seen
CMS in the news recently, featured in articles in both Lubes &
Greases Magazine and Chemical Week. (A link to the Chemical Week
article is included below.) The articles outline the growth of the
CMS industry and include input from numerous Forum members. As the
use of CMS grows in different sectors, the CMS Forum has an opportunity
to leverage our position to gain greater visibility. With this in
mind, we have just completed our 2003-2005 Communications Plan with
the help and participation of members and the Communications Committee.
Thank you to all of you who lent your input. The plan outlines nine
different industries to target for CMS and specific communications
goals for each. We look forward to implementing it over the next
two years.
I
am also pleased to draw your attention to our upcoming 7th annual
workshop on October 23, 2003 in Detroit. The agenda will be packed
with interesting case studies, sessions on CMS in Asia and the UK,
and practical advice on starting and maintaining a CMS program.
We look forward to seeing you there!
We hope you also enjoy the featured report on information technology
in CMS and the other updates included below. Best wishes for a relaxing
summer from all of us at the CMS Forum.
Warmest Regards,
Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

Dividends: Environmental and Economic Benefits of Information Technology
in CMS
By Karen Shapiro, Senior Scientist, and
Tracy Dyke Redmond, Associate Scientist, The Tellus Institute
The
Tellus Institute recently conducted a survey of nine CMS providers
and customers to assess the role that information technology plays
in Chemical Management Services. Chemical Management Information
Systems enable companies to access data that was previously unavailable
and integrate many sources of information into reports tailored
to users needs. Through these benefits, Chemical Management Information
Systems are providing significant value to CMS customers.

EU Announces New REACH Policy
The EU released a draft of its new chemicals policy in early
May, dubbed REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of
Chemicals). Chemical industry lobbyists have expressed concern that
the policy is too difficult to follow and will drive up prices prohibitively.
The EU and environmental allies respond that the current system
cannot ensure the safety of the chemicals they use and creates a
public health threat. More

Clean Equals Green: Chemical Savings in the Semiconductor
Industry
By Russ Arensman One
of the semiconductor industry's goals in recent years has been to
reduce the use of toxic chemicals, which endanger humans and contribute
to worldwide pollution. It's good for the environment and for public
relations. But the chip industry also is finding other surprising,
and more palpable, benefits: lower costs and, in some cases, better
manufacturing processes. This recent Electronic Business article
explores multiple cost-saving measures (including CMS) currently
being used in the semiconductor industry. Read
