Viewpoints from the Field
A promising future for CMS in the pharmaceutical sector
by Laura Wolfson and Jill Kauffman Johnson, Chemical Strategies Partnership

The time is ripe for introducing CMS to the pharmaceutical sector.  The Chemical Strategies Partnership conducted a series of informal interviews with representatives from the pharma and biotech sectors and CMS providers to investigate whether the pharma sector could successfully adopt and benefit from the CMS model. After evaluating the pharmaceutical industry based on a number of economic, environmental and organizational criteria, CSP believes that the pharmaceutical industry is in a strong position to utilize the model, particularly on the research side. The Green Chemistry Mandate
by Joel Makower, Clean Edge, Inc.

The search for greener chemicals has, in just a few short years, moved from a mission to a mandate. Spawned by a confluence of regulations, litigation, competitive pressures, and corporate missions, the world of "green chemistry" seems to be going mainstream. And -- as with alternative energy and other clean technologies -- the United States is falling behind its European and Asian brethren, which are more aggressively pushing green chemistry agendas. As Europe prepares for REACH, the sweeping new regulation on chemical manufacturers, importers, and users, some Americans are asking whether similar reforms are needed in the United States. The political climate is not warming to passing environmental legislation, especially something as ambitious as a comprehensive reform of chemical regulation. But change is in the air. State and local governments are enacting laws to eliminate dangerous substances. New leaders are emerging as advocates for environmental health protection. U.S. businesses are re-evaluating the materials that they make, use, and market. The process of U.S. chemical policy reform has begun. Learn more ...

Savings require close review

According to a recent survey, the average savings from outsourcing contracts awarded between 2003 and 2005 after calculating professional fees, severance pay and governance costs were only 15% - not the 60% that many outsourcing providers may be touting. Purchasing Magazine argues that outsourcing arrangements which focus solely on delivering huge savings often fail to meet client expectations. While cost reduction remains the primary motivation in current outsourcing contracts, a growing number of clients say they are outsourcing primarily to improve quality, or for the purpose of introducing innovation into their business. Shareholder Network Launched to Curtail Toxics in Products
Seventeen investing organizations representing more than $22 billion in assets under management have issued a joint statement calling for other financial professionals and investors to join with them in supporting shareholder resolutions seeking better disclosure regarding the risks of toxics in products, and better corporate strategies for moving to safer alternatives when they are available. According to the statement issued by the investors, it is insufficient to judge companies’ environmental practices by just measuring their emissions, waste sites, and penalties. Instead they propose that companies be benchmarked for their progress in adopting safer chemical policies and practices to reduce customer exposures to toxic chemicals in products. Learn more...
