A Message from the CMS Forum Director
The CMS Forum has taken the first
quarter of 2003 to step back and plan for the future. The CMS
industry has grown significantly since the inception of the CMS
Forum in 2000. Members felt it was important to review the landscape
and plot our course for the next several years. We completed the
Strategic Plan this month, thanks to the wonderful input and participation
from the Forum members. The CMS Forum is now poised to continue
to grow, help expand the CMS industry, and promote the economic
and environmental performance of CMS.
A key area of future growth for CMS is international expansion
of the model. The CMS Forum co-hosted a successful CMS workshop
in London this past February and continues to work in Asia and
the European Union. In addition, the Chemical Strategies Partnership
will be kicking off a pilot program in Korea next month. Be sure
to read an update of our international activities in this newsletter.
We have also started the new year with an increase in Forum membership;
we welcome the newest members of the CMS Forum. The growing number
of CMS provider and customer Forum members continue to bring new
energy and perspective to the Forum.
Warmest Regards,
Jill
Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

Advancing
the CMS Model in Korea
by John Claussen, Project Director, Chemical Strategies Partnership
Over the past year, CSP has begun efforts to advance the CMS model
internationally, both in Asia and Europe. Most recently, CSP has
been active in Korea and is now prepared to launch a one-year
initiative with support from the Korean government. Launching
a CMS initiative in Korea offers a unique opportunity to position
Korea as a leader in the region toward advancing sustainable solutions.

UNH
and Dartmouth to Participate in CSP University Project
In 2002, CSP launched a research project funded by the US
EPA Office of Solid Waste to explore the viability
of the CMS model in educational and research institutions. Based
on its leadership in approaching chemical management, the
University of New
Hampshire has been selected as one of two universities
that will provide a case study. Dartmouth
College has been recruited to participate in a pilot
CMS program. The pilot will explore whether a CMS program could
more cost effectively facilitate chemical management, including
the reduction and elimination of mercury, in an educational setting.

has hit new lows, corporate social responsibility and sustainability
reporting offer opportunities for companies to rebuild that trust.

Environment Program, aims to identify and classify best practice
in corporate accountability across the triple bottom line of sustainability.
It spotlights 100 sustainability reports from around the world,

CMS Forum Completes New Strategic Plan for 2003-2005
Late in 2002, the CMS Forum committed to re-evaluate its mission,
goals, and activities, and draft a Strategic Plan to guide the
organization over the next three years (2003-2005). The Strategic
Plan identifies current and expected challenges and opportunities
critical to shaping and impacting the CMS Forum. These include
a growing and diverse membership, a shifting target audience,
and a recessionary economic environment. While the overall mission
and objectives of the Forum remain the same, there are three strategic
areas where the CMS Forum will focus its efforts over the next
three years: 1) CMS standardization, 2) communications, and 3)
member recruiting. For more information, contact John Claussen
via email
or at (415) 421-3405 x11.
