A
message from the CMS Forum Director
Welcome
to the Fall 2005 issue of the CMS Insider. Preparations are going strong
for the 9th Annual CMS Workshop taking place on Oct. 19-21 at the San
Francisco Grand Hyatt. This year’s workshop features a diversity
of speakers and CMS programs that reflect the rapidly growing field
of CMS. We will also present the results of the 2005 Industry Report
Update. It is the prime networking and learning event of the year.
This
issue’s Viewpoints from the Field revisits Resource Management
(RM) – a service approach to waste management. RM is seeing considerable
growth in the industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors and
could potentially be bundled with a CMS program. CSP has conducted several
RM pilot projects with strong results.
We
want to say farewell to our interim Communications Director, Lauren
Johnson, and welcome back Darcy Wheeles, a former CSP staffer, as our
new Communications Director. We greatly appreciate Lauren’s work
on behalf of the CMS Forum during this transition and wish her well
in her new job in Portland, OR.
We
hope you will join us at the CMS Workshop later this month.
Warmest Regards,
Jill Kauffman
Johnson
CMS Forum Director

Opportunities
in Waste: Resource Management in the Institutional Context
By Tom Votta and Josephine Salm, Chemical Strategies Partnership
Resource
Management is a growing trend where commercial entities engage the assistance
of external contractors to drive resource efficiency through enhanced
source reduction, recycling, and recovery. Consistent with many current
supply chain trends and CMS, it offers promise for a cradle-to-grave
service approach to waste management.
The use of
RM has seen considerable growth in industrial sectors. RM has also gained
ground in the institutional sector; its application in schools is of
particular note. Two recent case studies describing RM programs in a
hospital and a school district are outlined in this article. To

New CSP Pilot Project with the Department of Defense
CSP recently began an evaluation project for the Defense Logistics Agency
(DLA), the supply logistics agency of the U.S. Department of Defense
(DoD). DLA provides worldwide logistics support for all branches of
Military service, as well as some civilian agencies. At this early stage
of the project, CSP will evaluate the feasibility of CMS at a pilot
location, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, OK, with a future vision
toward broader applicability within DoD. For more information on the
pilot project, contact Jeff Cole, CSP Program Director at jeff@chemicalstrategies.org.
New Communications Manager, Darcy Wheeles
Lauren Johnson, CMS Forum’s interim Communications Manager, is moving on to other professional opportunities, and Darcy Wheeles will be the new Communications Manager. Darcy Wheeles is a former CSP staffer
and was the first Communications Manager of the CMS Forum. Lauren has
served the CMS Forum with great leadership over the past six months
and we greatly appreciate her support during this transition. All those
attending the workshop will have an opportunity to wish Lauren farewell
and welcome Darcy. You can contact Darcy Wheeles at darcy@chemicalstrategies.org.
