A
message from the CMS Forum Director
This Fall has been busy and exciting for all of us at CSP and the
CMS Forum. On September 15th, CSP and the CMS Forum released the
2004 Industry Report. This is the second industry-wide study which
was conducted with the assistance of University of California graduate
students and the participation of the CMS community. The report
reveals that CMS activity has grown roughly 50 percent since 2000
and CMS is now used in more than eleven sectors. The report and
executive summary are available on the CSP website at www.chemicalstrategies.org.
We
recently held our 8th Annual CMS Workshop in Dallas/Arlington, Texas.
We had the most diverse audience ever with representatives from
more than seven different industrial sectors, many new Tier II suppliers,
as well as state and federal government representation. With a new
format, the workshop provided more opportunities for in-depth discussions
in breakout sessions and lively plenary sessions. For those of you
who weren’t able to make it, a full summary of the workshop
will soon be available on the CSP website.
CSP co-hosted a workshop in Yorkshire, United Kingdom on October
21kicking off a two year pilot program taking place in the region.
The workshop generated interest by many of the participants in the
CMS concept and we will partner with a company in the next few months
to launch a pilot project. We look forward to reporting on the progress
of this project.
And finally, one of our devoted team members, John Claussen, has
relocated to Indonesia to help represent CSP and the CMS Forum in
Asia and work on a coral reef preservation project. We are thrilled
to have our team expanding globally.
Best wishes for a warm and wonderful Fall season, and thank you
all for your support.
Warmest Regards,
Jill
Kauffman Johnson

Waste
Management: Managing the Complete Chemical Lifecycle
By Tom Votta, Deputy Director, Chemical Strategies Partnership
A powerful new trend in waste contracting—Resource Management(RM)—is
gathering steam as commercial waste generators and contractors start
to rethink the nature of waste and recycling arrangements. Informed
by our recent supplier workshop on waste management, this article
explores the possibilities of combining this new tool with CMS to
manage the total chemical life cycle. Read full article…

CSP
and CMS Forum Convene 8th Annual CMS Workshop
CSP and the CMS Forum successfully convened the 8th Annual CMS Workshop
October 13th -15th in Arlington, Texas. This year’s workshop
attracted 81 participants including representatives from CMS customer
companies, new customers exploring CMS, CMS providers, Tier II suppliers,
universities, and government. Attendees were treated to lively presentations
and more opportunities than ever to engage in deep dialogue during
breakout sessions. Participants heard case studies on mature CMS
programs at Raytheon and the GM plant in Silao, Mexico. Roundtable
discussions and breakouts included sessions on conducting the internal
sell, international trends, involving minority-owned businesses
in the supply base, getting started with a CMS program, CMS in the
university context, structuring a successful CMS contract, and creating
value in a mature CMS program. In addition to the primary workshop,
suppliers participated in a separate supplier discussion session
to discuss waste management, interfacing with Tier IIs, and current
regulatory trends and EPA tools. A Friday morning session allowed
representatives from the automotive, aerospace/air transport, and
universities sectors to meet for industry-specific roundtable breakfast
discussions and benchmarking sessions. As always, the conference
was a wonderful opportunity to examine current issues in CMS and
network with the major players in the industry. Make sure to check
the CSP website in the coming weeks for a full workshop
summary.
CSP Holds Kick-Off Workshop for Project in Yorkshire, UK
CSP co-hosted the first workshop for its joint project with Yorkshire
Forward and International eChem in West Yorkshire, UK on October
21, 2004. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the concept
of CMS to prospective CMS customers and suppliers in the Yorkshire
region. There were 23 attendees representing chemical suppliers,
customers, and the NGO sector. Participants heard an overview of
CMS concepts, case studies from TRW Automotive/Castrol and PPG Industries
Poland, and explored key issues in CMS. The project’s next
step will be to identify a pilot company in the Yorkshire region
to test the CMS model in Yorkshire. Check
the CSP website in the coming weeks for a workshop
summary. For more information, contact
Tom Votta.
2004 Industry Report Released!
CSP and the CMS Forum released the 2004 Industry Report on September
15th. The second industry-wide study reveals that CMS is now used
in more than eleven sectors, up from approximately five sectors
in 2000. The report also finds that the CMS market has grown roughly
50 percent since 2000 to approximately $1.22 billion (FY1999-2003)
and all indicators point to continued steady growth. To view the
report or the executive summary, click

CSP’s
Project Director Relocates to Asia
CSP’s Project Director, John Claussen, has recently relocated
to Indonesia in order to focus his efforts on a new coral reef preservation
project with the Conservation and Community Investment Forum (CCIF)
(www.cciforum.org). He will continue to support the activities and
clients of the Chemical Strategies Partnership (www.chemicalstrategies.org),
where appropriate, throughout Asia. Contact
John.

Seven
companies join SPE
The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SPE) is a membership
organization that facilitates vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers
to share information to improve the environment and provide cost
savings to member companies. Seven new members joined the organization,
including Quaker Chemical Corporation. Other CMS Forum members involved
in this initiative include General Motors, Chemico Systems, DaimlerChrysler,
and Haas TCM. View

EU
to Strengthen Enforcement of Environmental Regulations
Stavros Dimas, the EU’s new environment commissioner, has
said he will prioritize enforcement of EU environmental legislation.
His comments coincide with the release of a EU Commission study
that criticizes the effectiveness of the implementation of environmental
legislation, citing 88 outstanding cases of member states failing
to introduce legislation on time.
GEMI report to help companies pursue supply chain “value
creation opportunities”
The Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) has released
a new report to help companies recognize, prioritize and pursue
specific supply-chain "value creation opportunities."
GEMI has developed this report to help companies leverage their
EHS capabilities to improve supply chain performance and enhance
shareholder value. The range of potential EHS contributions includes
tangible financial gains, such as converting waste materials into
useful byproducts, as well as enhancement of key value drivers such
as technological innovation, employee productivity, and reputation.

Research
Chemists Invite Industry Collaboration
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, a global
association of research chemists, is looking to collaborate more
closely with the chemical industry to promote “green chemistry”.
IUPAC defines green chemistry as “the invention, design, and
application of chemical products and processes to reduce or eliminate
the use and generation of hazardous substances.” Their position
is that widespread adoption of green chemistry should promote a
better public image of chemistry, encourage more people to take
up chemistry as a profession, as well as reduce waste, energy use,
and pollution. IUPAC is supported by 45 national organizations,
most of which have thousands of individual members. Visit
the IUPAC Website.
