A message from the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the CMS Insider produced by the CMS Forum. This edition includes great information from the Forum's first foray into Asia.
We hosted a very successful workshop in Singapore and a series of productive meetings with university and government officials in Korea.
These activities in Asia are part of a coordinated effort to introduce CMS to the region. Also included in this edition of the CMS
Insider is the latest research from two business school professors looking at CMS as a strategy for greening the supply chain.
The big event for the Fall is the CSP/CMS Forum 6th Annual Workshop which takes place in Chicago on October 24. The agenda is
packed with CMS case studies, information on new technical advances in CMS services, and practical advice on starting and maintaining
a successful CMS program. We hope you will join us for what should be our largest gathering ever. We look forward to seeing you
there!
Warmest Regards,
Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

Greening the supply chain: Shared savings contracts for chemical management services
by Charles J. Corbett, Anderson Graduate School of Management, UCLA; and Gregory A. DeCroix,
Fuqua School of Business, Duke University
Two business school professors have been collaborating over the
past several years researching the opportunities to drive environmental
improvement through innovative supply chain strategies. They have
focused on chemical management services as one example of a strategy
to "green the supply chain". Several CMS Forum members have generously
participated in their research. Learn about their research efforts
and their emerging ideas on shared savings contracts in CMS programs.

One More CMS Workshop in 2002:
6th Annual CSP Workshop: Lessons, Innovations, and Future Directions for CMS
October 24, 2002 - Hyatt Regency O'Hare, Rosemont, IL
Sponsored by Chemical Strategies Partnership, CMS Forum, Illinois Waste Management and Research Center, and the
Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs
Be part of the only workshop dedicated to bringing together stakeholders from industry, government, non-profit,
and academic organizations for candid discussions about chemical management services (CMS). Join leaders in the CMS
field for presentations and conversations on current CMS program case studies, trends in the CMS industry, and future
applications of the CMS model. CSP's workshops provide interested companies with the tools to optimize chemical
management - ultimately reducing costs, eliminating inventory, optimizing chemical use, and reducing liability.

CSP Launches a New Research Program
CSP is launching a research project funded by the US EPA Office of Solid Waste to explore the viability of the CMS
model in educational and research institutions. CSP will be conducting a review of best practices in chemical management
in schools and universities. CSP will also conduct a CMS pilot program with an educational institution. For
more information, contact Jeffrey Rosenblum at 617-266-5400 x1228.
CSP Completes Trip to SE Asia
CSP staff recently visited both Singapore and Korea in an effort to expand CMS activities to the SE Asia region. CSP held
a successful workshop in Singapore (see CMS Forum Focus for more information) and then met with several stakeholders from
industry and government to explore the possibility of a CMS project in Singapore. In addition, CSP was invited to Korea by
the U.S. State Department and met with representatives from Keimyung University's Nakdonggang Environmental Research Institute
(NERI) as well as government and other stakeholders to discuss specific opportunities for a CMS initiative in Korea. CSP will
continue to have active dialogue with both Singapore and Korean government agencies to pursue opportunities in both countries.

How Buyers use Checklists to Gauge Supplier Strengths and Weaknesses
To be competitive, a company needs to deliver a product or service that has attractive features,

Asia Walks the Walk, but with Miles Yet to Travel
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, says the famous Chinese proverb. That is also true
of the spread of Responsible Care in Asia. Initiatives are growing in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan,
but executives with multinational companies say the need to involve additional manufacturers-especially small local
companies-and to incorporate more environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) elements guarantees that the journey
toward full implementation will be long.
