Fall 2007

A publication of the CMS Forum; a project of the Chemical Strategies Partnership

Notes from the Forum
A message from the CMS Forum Director
Welcome to the Fall 2007 issue of the CMS Insider.

The 11th Annual CMS Workshop in San Francisco is just around the corner. Be sure to book your hotel room and register by October 1st to receive the best rates. Don’t miss this opportunity to network with seasoned experts in the CMS field and learn from CMS customers who will discuss their programs.  Please visit our website to view the current agenda and register for the event.

In this issue's Viewpoints from the Field, Mark Stoughton shares the EPA’s recent efforts to promote CMS through its broader support for “green servicizing” business models.  Like CMS, such models restructure the economic relationships that mediate how products deliver function or utility, and in so doing, they often offer an eco-efficiency improvement over “business as usual." Through promotion of the “servicizing” model, EPA seeks to create a shift in American society from “waste management” to “materials management”.

Recently, we have seen renewed interest from the Korean government in the CMS model.  Representatives of the Korean Chemical Manufacturer’s Association and other affiliates were hosted by several CMS Forum members to view programs and learn more about CMS in the US.

Lastly, we would also like to extend a warm welcome to our newest member, Airgas, Inc.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Workshop in San Francisco!

Warmest Regards,
Jill Kauffman Johnson
CMS Forum Director

Green Servicizing: EPA’s renewed interest in business models that mirror CMS
by Mark Stoughton, The Cadmus Group

The U.S. EPA’s Office of Solid Waste (OSW) has commissioned a study seeking information to help determine “the most appropriate, substantive, and effective next steps for using servicizing to aid in decoupling material, water, chemical and energy use from economic growth.”  “Performance-based” procurement models, including CMS, are a major focus of the study. Recent research in both Europe and Japan confirms that these models, as a class, have special potential to improve eco-efficiency over “business as usual.”  The EPA sees servicizing as playing an important role in achieving a vision of moving the American society away from being a waste management society toward a materials management society. CMS Forum hosts a Korean delegation
Thank you to all the CMS Forum members who, in early September, hosted a delegation from Korea that toured facilities and learned more about how CMS is implemented in the US.  The Korean Ministry of Environment is interested in developing and promoting CMS in Korea.  A consortium of consulting firms and the Korea Chemicals Management Association have been funded by the Government as part of "Eco-Technopia 21", a 10 year program (2001 - 2010) administered by the Korean Ministry of Environment.  The scope of this three year CMS effort covers the development of a database (laws, regulation, chemical information, etc), management software (system), a lifecycle tracking system, and pilot program implementation.

Ithaca College to launch a class on CMS and Supply Chain Management
Ithaca College will launch a new course on Supply Chain Sustainability and CMS in Spring 2008. The course will integrate business theory with hands-on project work.  A key component of the course will be case studies from current CMS programs illustrating how companies have increased profits and reduced environmental impact by strategically partnering with a service provider. The course will be taught by Joseph R. Sprangel, who has thirty years of experience in industry, including plant management, systems operations, lean manufacturing, and process improvements. In addition, experts from the field of CMS will be invited to deliver guest lectures. For more information, please contact Laura Wolfson.

Supply Chains under REACH
By Steffen Erler, Chemical Risk Consultant
The intricacies of REACH pose new management challenges for companies trading with the EU, as well as those operating within the EU. Many companies require information from their suppliers for REACH compliance. This need for transmitting product information through international supply chains has triggered the first legal challenge for REACH. Companies are developing new policies, tools and management structures to face such challenges. Read more.

Best Practices in Risk Management

Purchasing
Maintaining continuity of supply by mitigating risk has always been a critical part of supply chain management. Now, a recent study by SAP and BrainNet concludes that risk management is growing in importance, including risks from natural disasters and regulatory pressures. Having good supplier relationships is one of the first lines of defense. Read more.

The Future is Looking Green
Inside Supply Management
Kermit the Frog had it right when he said, "It's not easy being green." While it might have been difficult for the popular amphibian to deal with his olive-hued skin, it can be equally challenging for corporations to transition everyday supply management practices to new sustainability standards that benefit the environment, society and the economy. The question is: Are companies doing what they need to in order to support green practices? What are the major issues that still need to be addressed in terms of supply management? Read more.

Businesses Embracing Green Procurement, Survey Says
GreenBiz.com
According to a new survey from EyeForProcurement, more than 50 percent of companies have policies on greening their supply chain, and companies are nearly unanimous in their belief that green supply chains will only continue growing. The survey asked 188 procurement professionals -- primarily in the United States, Europe and Asia -- about their companies' practices, policies and plans for reducing the environmental impact of the materials used in their work. The two most heavily represented sectors in the survey were the transportation/logistics fields and the high-tech industry. Read more.

Greening Up the Supply Chain
Supply Chain Management Review
Environmentalism is no longer the exclusive realm of nonprofit groups. Now, the corporate community is getting into the act. For early adopters, taking an environmental perspective into account is paying off in increased revenue and profits as well as customer loyalty and employee retention. The stage is set for a new era of winners and losers and the deciding factor may well be how they approach the current set of environmental and sustainability challenges. Read more.

Canada, Mexico, U.S. Sign Chemical Testing Pact
Chemical Week
The governments of Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. have signed a trilateral chemical testing accord to prioritize and conduct risk assessments for thousands of industrial chemicals. The U.S., by 2012, will complete risk characterizations on 9,000 chemicals produced above 25,000 lbs/year. Read more.
